Chamaerops humilis

Chamaerops humilis is a palm that has become very popular the last years in northern Europe, especially England, which mainly is because of the great hardiness and the decorative look. By the years it has become very popular in winter mild Scandinavian gardens too. Small individuals can manage temperatures down to -5°C in dry conditions. But some damage on the leaves must be expected. Bigger and more established palms can manage temperatures down to -10°C good, but the leaves may get seriously damaged. Chamaerops humilis will not reach full hardiness in Scandinavia, and it is therefore recommend only for the mildest areas.

Chamaerops humilis is a palm that shows great variation in shape and look. Some individuals develop a bushy shape, while others grow tall (max 5 metres). But the palm grows relative slow (remarkable faster growth in ground than in pot). The colour on the leaves ranges from yellow green to blue green.

The palm can develop flowers, which are hidden behind the pinnacles of the leaves. The flowers are well protected, because of the many sharp thorns that cover the leafstalks. In the autumn dark seeds follow the flowers. Planted seeds will germinate fast, compared to other palm seeds.

Well-drained soil and part shadow are important factors on the growth site. The palm manages drought very good, while high humidity in the earth is a bad factor. The palm will develop long leafstalks in conditions where shadow dominates the light/shadow balance. Too long leafstalks make the palm weak, and it reduces the hardiness. Chamaerops humilis is fragile when it comes to wind, and should therefore be planted on a sheltered spot. The palm should perform well on the western coast of Norway, over all of Jylland (Denmark) and on the southwestern coast of Sweden.
