Chamaerops humilis
Chamaerops
humilis is a palm that shows great variation in shape and look. Some
individuals develop a bushy shape, while others grow tall (max 5 metres).
But the palm grows relative slow (remarkable faster growth in ground than in
pot). The colour on the leaves ranges from yellow green to blue green.
Well-drained soil and part shadow are important factors on the growth site. The palm manages drought very good, while high humidity in the earth is a bad factor. The palm will develop long leafstalks in conditions where shadow dominates the light/shadow balance. Too long leafstalks make the palm weak, and it reduces the hardiness. Chamaerops humilis is fragile when it comes to wind, and should therefore be planted on a sheltered spot. The palm should perform well on the western coast of Norway, over all of Jylland (Denmark) and on the southwestern coast of Sweden.
